Volunteering that changes lives, including your own
We often talk about the difference our volunteers make in the lives of the people we support, but we don't always stop to think about the difference volunteering makes in their lives too.
Recently, our team member Jacqueline sat down with one of our regular Marketplace volunteers to hear her story. She shared how volunteering came into her life during a difficult season and how it has given her a renewed sense of purpose, hope and belonging. Being an integral part of the Marketplace team has helped her grow in confidence, build meaningful friendships and become a part of a community where she feels she truly belongs.
Over the years, we've seen volunteers discover strengths they never knew they had, grow in confidence, support one another through life's challenges and find joy in serving others. One volunteer told us: “When my lovely husband died there was a huge gap in my life... I've benefited from meeting and being with a wonderful group of volunteers."
It's easy to think volunteering is just about giving your time. But consistently we see that it's also about finding connection, community and discovering gifts you never knew you had.
Our volunteers often tell us how volunteering has shaped their lives. One volunteer reflected on the growth they've seen in others, while others shared their own personal experiences:
"…over the years, we've seen so many of our Monday volunteers flourish and discover talents they never knew they had, listening to distraught clients, and showing them love and care. Some coming out of their shell and gaining confidence talking to clients. Also being there for each other when going through difficult times.. Love this work so much!!"
“When my lovely husband died there was a huge gap in my life. I talked to my neighbour about volunteering and she suggested Southampton City Mission. I hope I’m helping a little, and I’ve benefited from meeting and being with a wonderful group of volunteers.”
“Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose and a sense of belonging. The purpose comes from being able to give to those who are in greatest need. The belonging comes from being a member of a loving, courageous and gentle team.”If you've ever wondered whether volunteering could be for you or you've been thinking about getting involved, we'd love to hear from you.
